Why Are Bed Bugs Rampant?
Why the resurgence of bed bugs today? The most popular theory is international travel. Bed bugs are great travelers, hitching rides on suitcases, clothing and shoes. So someone traveling can infest a hotel room, and subsequent guests to the same hotel room, or even adjacent rooms, can carry the little hitchhikers to other hotels, airports, convention centers, restaurants, and even to their own homes. All it takes is one female bed bug to create a huge infestation. It is estimated that a single female can start a bed bug infestation that could reach 13,000 bed bugs in just one year.
Another theory as to why they are making a comeback is a change in extermination tactics in todays “Go Green” society. Bed bugs don’t have nests like ants or bees, although they do tend to congregate in habitual hiding places. Pest control baits and gels have no effect on bed bugs. It takes stronger chemicals to eliminate bed bug.
According to Tim Jackson, Pest Control Supervisor for Ace Exterminating “When we treat a property for bed bugs, we do three separate treatments. The second and third treatments are necessary to ensure we eliminate any new bed bugs from eggs that have hatched or from any hiding spots we may have missed on the initial treatment”.
