Bed bugs have been around for centuries. Pliny’s Natural History, first published in c.77 AD in Rome, claimed bed bugs had medicinal value in treating ailments such as snake bites and ear infections.
Bed bugs were first mentioned in Germany in the 11th century, in France in the 13th century and in England in 1583, though rare in England until 1670. In 1933, the UK Ministry of Health reported there were many areas where all the houses had some degree of bed bug infestation.
Bed bugs are even mentioned in medieval European texts and in classical Greek writings as early as 400 BC.
In the US, bed bugs were very common until about WWII. However, they remained fairly prevalent in other parts of the world, such as Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe.
