What Are Bed Bugs?
Bedbugs are flat little wingless insects that are approximately ¼” long and range from a very light, almost translucent color (if they are babies, called nymphs) to a rusty red color if they have just had a blood meal.  They are nocturnal insects that have a maximum attack period of an hour or two before sunrise, although they will feed during the day if a host becomes available and they are desperately in need of a meal.
Attracted mainly by the carbon dioxide that humans exhale, bed bugs find their host at night also by the human scent and by the warmth.
Bed bugs have 2 hollow tubes they use for feeding.  The first tube serves two purposes. It injects an anesthetic so the host won’t feel the initial bite. It also injects it’s saliva which contains a coagulant to keep the blood flowing.  The second tube is used to withdraw the blood from the host.
The entire feeding process takes only 5 to 10 minutes and makes the bed bug grow to three times their normal size.
After feeding, they return to their hiding place until it is time for their next meal.  A well fed bed bug can live 4 to 6 months without feeding again, although they usually look for a blood meal every 5 to 10 days.
